DID YOU KNOW?

The Uyuni Salt Flats are the largest in the world.

Spanning over 10,000 km², this vast salt mirror is so immense it can be seen from space.

It was once a prehistoric lake

Around 30,000 years ago, the salt flats were part of a giant lake called Lake Minchin, which evaporated, leaving behind a thick layer of salt.

It holds one of the largest lithium reserves in the world.

It is estimated to contain over 50% of the world's lithium, a key resource for electric vehicle batteries.

A science fiction landscape

The Salt Flats have been the backdrop for films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi due to their unique and surreal scenery.

A paradise for photography

During the rainy season (January-March), the Salt Flats turn into a giant mirror, creating perfect reflections of the sky. Although it remains dry in October, the infinite horizon is equally spectacular.

Its altitude is almost uniform

The variation in elevation across its entire expanse is just 50 cm, making it one of the flattest terrains on the planet.

A unique ecosystem

Despite appearing inhospitable, the Salt Flats are home to pink flamingos and are close to islands like Incahuasi, which host giant cacti over 10 meters tall.
